Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
Ankay Büküm performs SAW welding for 6-100 mm thick sections in penstock pipe and heavy steel fabrication.
What Is Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)?
Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is a high-efficiency arc welding process in which the welding arc forms beneath a blanket of granular flux powder. With high current values and deep penetration capability, it is preferred especially for joining thick-section steel components. At Ankay Büküm in Ankara's Ostim Industrial District, our SAW machines perform long seam welding, penstock longitudinal and circumferential welding, and heavy steel construction fabrication in thicknesses from 6 mm to 100 mm. With our proven weld quality in hydropower penstock projects, we are a trusted partner in the sector.
Application Areas
- Penstock Fabrication: Longitudinal and circumferential seam welding of hydropower penstock segments, DN300 to DN3000, 6-60 mm wall thickness
- Tank and Vessel Fabrication: Large-diameter storage tank body and bottom welding, LPG/LNG tank fabrication welding
- Shipbuilding: Hull plate joining, deck panel welding, and large body structures
- Bridges and Steel Structures: Main girder welding of large steel bridges, box profile body welding, and heavy steel construction
- Pressure Vessels: Pressure vessel body seam welding, nozzle connection welding, and thick-wall equipment fabrication
Technical Capacity and Specifications
Our facility operates automatic and semi-automatic SAW machines. Single and multi-wire welding is applied for thicknesses from 6 mm to 100 mm. Welding speed ranges from 30-150 cm per hour. Welding current is adjustable from 400A to 1500A. Flat seam, circumferential seam, and spiral seam welding configurations are available. Wire-flux combinations are selected per project requirements. Annual welding capacity exceeds 500 tonnes.
Quality Assurance
Our SAW welding operations are fully compliant with EN ISO 3834-2 welding quality management standard. WPS is prepared for each seam and documented with WPQR. Post-weld 100% ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), and TOFD are applied as required. Penstock projects comply with EN 10219 and AWWA C200 standards.
Ankay Büküm provides significant industrial SAW welding capacity from Ankara Ostim. Frequently Asked Questions
What is submerged arc welding (SAW) and what is it used for?
SAW is a high-efficiency welding process where the arc forms beneath a flux blanket. It is used for long seam welding of thick plates. Widely preferred in penstock, tank, shipbuilding, and bridge fabrication.
What thicknesses can SAW handle?
SAW welding is applied for steel thicknesses from 6 mm to 100 mm. Single-pass and multi-pass welding methods are used.
What is Ankay Büküm's SAW capacity?
Automatic SAW machines up to 1500A welding current with annual capacity exceeding 500 tonnes. Flat seam, circumferential, and spiral seam welding available.
What products are made with SAW?
Penstock segments, large-diameter tanks, ship hull structures, bridge main girders, pressure vessels, and heavy steel constructions are produced.
How are pricing and delivery times determined?
Pricing is based on weld length, material thickness, seam type, and NDT requirements. Penstock projects follow detailed scheduling. Contact us for project details.
