Vertical Lathe
Ankay Büküm operates 4m and 1400mm capacity vertical lathes for machining large-diameter flanges, rings, and discs.
What Is Vertical Lathe Machining?
Vertical lathe (vertical turning) is a machining process in which the workpiece is mounted on a horizontally rotating table and processed with cutting tools along the vertical axis. It is particularly suited for machining large-diameter, heavy, and cylindrical parts. At Ankay Büküm's Ankara Ostim facilities, we operate two vertical lathes with 4-meter and 1400 mm table capacities. These machines process penstock flanges, rotary kiln tyres, large-diameter rings, and disc parts with high precision.
Application Areas
- Penstock Flanges: Large-diameter connection flanges for hydropower penstock projects, weld preparation and surface machining
- Cement and Mining: Rotary kiln tyres, mill body flanges, clinker cooler rings, and heavy industry disc parts
- Energy Sector: Turbine casing components, generator flanges, wind turbine bearing seats, and transformer tank cover flanges
- Valves and Pumps: Large-diameter valve bodies, pump volute casings, and pressure reducer flanges
- General Machine Manufacturing: Custom machine parts, rotary table surfaces, journal bearing seats, and gearbox body flanges
Technical Capacity and Specifications
Our 4-meter table vertical lathe has the capacity to machine parts up to DN4000 in diameter. The second machine with a 1400 mm table handles parts up to DN1400. Both machines perform external turning, internal turning, face turning, grooving, and weld preparation. Machining accuracy achieves tolerances up to +/- 0.05 mm. Maximum workpiece weight on the 4-meter table is up to 15 tonnes.
Quality Assurance
Dimensional accuracy in vertical lathe operations is ensured through continuous measurement and control. Every part is verified post-machining with coordinate measuring machines (CMM) or portable measuring instruments. Surface roughness values are adjusted between Ra 1.6 and Ra 6.3 according to project requirements. Production follows our EN ISO 9001 quality management system.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is vertical lathe machining and what is it used for?
Vertical lathe is a machining method where large-diameter heavy parts rotate on a horizontal table and are processed along the vertical axis. It is used for flange turning, ring machining, weld preparation, and surface finishing.
What materials can be machined on a vertical lathe?
Carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, bronze, brass, and special alloy materials are processed. Part diameter up to 4000 mm, weight up to 15 tonnes.
What is Ankay Büküm's vertical lathe capacity?
Two vertical lathes with 4-meter and 1400 mm tables are available. Parts up to DN4000 diameter are machined. Tolerance down to +/- 0.05 mm is achieved.
What products can be machined on a vertical lathe?
Penstock flanges, rotary kiln tyres, large-diameter valve bodies, turbine parts, disc and ring-form components, and weld preparation work are performed.
How are pricing and delivery times determined?
Pricing is project-based according to part size, material, machining volumes, and tolerance requirements. Individual parts take 3-7 business days; serial work is planned accordingly. Send your drawings for a quotation.
